005、Courage 勇氣
It was a few weeks before Christmas in 1917.
1917年，在聖誕節前的幾個星期。
The beautiful snowy landscapes of Europe were blackened by war.
美麗的歐洲雪景正被戰爭所燻黑。
It was World War I and the Germans were in their trenches on one side of the battle field, and the Americans were in their trenches on the other side.
這正是第一次世界大戰，德國人在他們的戰場壕溝的一側，美國人在他們戰場戰壕的另一側。
The exchange of gunfire had been intense.
雙方一直激烈交火。
Between these two companies of soldiers was a thin strip of no-man's-land.
在這兩國部兵連之間是一條無人地帶。
A young German soldier, trying to cross no-man's land, had become caught in the tangle of barbed wire.
有一位年輕的德國士兵，試圖穿越無人地帶，卻陷在糾結的鐵絲網裡。
He cried out pitifully for help.
他可憐地哀號著，尋求幫助。
Whenever there was a lull in the noise of the shells exploding, the Americans in that sector could hear him scream.
每當砲彈爆炸的噪音平靜時，在該防區的美國士兵就會聽到他的哀號聲。
Finally one American soldier could stand this crying no longer and carefully crawled out of the safety of his trench to help the German.
最後，一名美國士兵不再忍受這哀號聲了，他小心翼翼地爬出他的戰壕，來幫助這德國人。
Right away the Americans stopped firing for fear of hitting their own man, then the German officer realized what the young American was doing and ordered his men to also cease firing.

Now there was a weird silence across the no-man's-land.

On his stomach, the American made his way over to the German soldier and disentangled him.

He then stood up with the German in his arms, walked straight to the German trenches and placed him in the waiting arms of his comrades.

Having done so, he turned and started back to the American trenches.
做完之後，他轉過身來準備走回美國戰壕。
Suddenly there was a hand on his shoulder that spun him around.
突然有一隻手靠在他的肩膀上，把他身體轉過來，
There stood a German officer who had won the Iron Cross, the highest German honor for bravery.
眼前站著一位德國軍官，他身上配戴著鐵十字勳章，它是德國勇氣的最高榮譽。
He jerked it from his own uniform and placed it on the American, who then walked back to his own company of soldiers.
他從自己的制服取下這鐵十字勳章，並把它配在美國士兵制服上。隨後，這美國士兵走回到自己部兵連裡。
When he was safely back in the American trenches, they resumed the insanity of war!
當他安全地回到美國的戰壕後，雙方恢復了瘋狂的戰爭！
