It had been a year since Susan, 34, had become blind.
蘇珊三十四歲時失明,已經過了一年了。
Owing to a medical misdiagnosis, she lost the sight of both her eyes.

Suddenly her world changed to total darkness, which made her angry and frustrated with life.

Mark was an army officer and loved Susan very much.

When she first lost her sight, he watched her lose all hope and determined to help his wife gain the strength and confidence she needed to become independent again.

Finally Susan felt ready to return to her job, but how would she get there?

Susan was horrified at the idea of taking the bus alone.

"I'm blind!" She responded bitterly.

Mark promised Susan that he would ride the bus with her, for as long as it took, until she felt comfortable to do it by herself.
馬克答應蘇珊,他會與她乘坐公共汽車,無論要花多久時間都無所謂,直到她感覺自己做這件事稱心為止。
For two weeks, Mark, in his military uniform, accompanied Susan to and from work each day.

He taught her how to rely on her hearing to determine where she was and how to adapt to her new environment.

Finally, Susan decided that she was ready to make the trip to work by herself.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday…Each day on her own went perfectly, and Susan had never felt better.
週一,週二,週三,週四......每天她自己完美地完成了,蘇珊感覺太好了。
She was doing it!
她做到了!
She was going to work all by herself.
她將完全靠自己去上班了。
On Friday morning, Susan took the bus to work as usual.
週五早上,蘇珊像往常一樣搭公交車上班。
As she was paying the fare to exit the bus, the driver said, "Boy, I sure do envy you."
當她要付了錢要下車時,司機說,「老天,我真的很羨慕妳。」
She was quite surprised by his remark, so asked him, "What do you mean?"
她很驚訝他所說的話,所以問他,「你是什麼意思?」
The driver answered that he had noticed during the past week that a military man had especially been watching her as she got off the bus and went to her office each morning, then when he was assured that she was all right, he saluted and left.
司機回答說,他已經注意到在過去的一週裡,每天有一位軍人特別注意她,看著她下了車,走去她的辦公室,當他確定她沒事了,他敬了個禮,然後離開。
The driver thought she was "One lucky lady!"
司機覺得她是個幸運的姑娘!
Tears of happiness poured down Susan's cheeks.
幸福的淚水從蘇珊的臉頰傾瀉而下。
For although she couldn't physically see him, he had gone far beyond her expectations in watching over her.
因為雖然她不能實際看到他,他已經遠遠超出了她的預期的關注她。
