003、The Window 窗戶
Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.
兩位男子，都身患重病，住在同一間病房。
One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.
其中一人每天下午被允許坐起來在他床上一個小時，來幫助他排出肺部的液體。
His bed was next to the room's only window.
他的床靠近病房的唯一窗口。
The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.
另一名男子必須整天平躺著。
The men enjoyed talking about their families, their jobs, their military service, and their vacations.
這兩位男子喜歡談論他們的家人，他們的工作，他們的服兵役，和他們的假期。
Every afternoon when the man by the window could sit up, he would take time to describe what he saw outside.
每天下午，當這名靠窗戶的男子能坐起來時，他會花時間來描述他所看到的外面。
The man in the other bed greatly enjoyed this because he learned more about all the activities of the world beyond the hospital.
在另一張床上的男子很喜歡這一點，因為他能更了解超出醫院以外的世界的所有活動。
One afternoon, as the man by the window was describing something special, there came a new thought to the listening man, "It doesn't seem fair that the other man can see everything while I can't!"
一天下午，當靠窗戶的這名男子描述了一件特別的事時，這一位聆聽者有一個新的思維：「這似乎不公平的，那個人可以看到一切，而我卻不能！」
Then the man felt ashamed for thinking such a thing.
隨後，這男子覺得有這樣的想法使他感到羞愧。
But as days passed, the man continued to feel sorry for himself in missing out on "all the fun."
但隨著日子一天天過去，這男子持續覺得自己錯過「所有的樂趣」感到很遺憾。
Now his one goal in life was to be by that window.
現在，他人生的一個目標是要能夠得到靠窗戶的床位。
This thought so controlled his life that he couldn't even sleep.
這種想法控制他的生活，以致於他甚至無法入睡。
Late one night, as he lay awake, his roommate began to cough.
一天深夜，當他醒著躺在床上時，他的室友開始咳嗽。
He was choking on the fluid in his lungs.
他被他肺部的液體嗆到。
The other man knew that his struggling roommate needed help fast.
他知道正在掙扎的室友極需要快速幫助。
Listening from across the room, he never moved; he never tried to help in any way.
他聽到了傳遍整個房間的聲音，卻從未移動一下，他從未嘗試去做任何的援助。
In five minutes the coughing stopped as well as the breathing.
五分鐘後，咳嗽停止了，呼吸也停止了。
Then it was all quiet — too quiet! 、
然後一片的寂靜，太安靜了！
The following morning when the nurse came, she found that the man by the window had died.
第二天早晨，當護士來時，她發現靠窗戶的男子已經死亡。
The hospital attendants took him away.
醫院的值班人員把他移走了。
Later, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window.
後來，這名男子問道他是否可以換到靠窗戶的床位，
This was permitted.
他被允許了。
When he was alone, he painfully raised up on one elbow to have his first look at the world outside.
當他獨自一人時，他痛苦地用手肘抬起身體，第一次來看外面的世界。
But surprisingly, the window faced only a blank wall.
但是，出人意料的是，窗戶只面對一片無窗無門的牆壁。
The puzzled man asked the nurse why his deceased roommate had taken the time to describe such wonderful things outside the window.
這滿腹疑惑的人問護士為什麼他那已故的室友會花時間來描述窗外那樣美好的事情。
The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.
護士回答道，該男子是個盲人，他甚至看不到那面牆壁。
She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."
她說：「他也許只是想鼓勵你。」
