二、述部結構
述部以動詞為中心，而依動詞種類的不同，而產生五種不同的句型結構：
述部Predicate：
1. 完全不及物動詞Vi + 修飾語Modifier
2. 連綴動詞Vi + 補語（complement）受詞Object或補語Complement
3. 完全及物動詞Vt + 受詞Object
4. 授與動詞Vt + 受詞Object + 受詞Object
5. 不完全及物動詞Vt + 受詞Object + 補語（Complement）
動詞若為完全不及物動詞Vi，則其後除修飾M外，什麼都不接：
1. Hannh cried.
漢娜哭了。
動詞若屬連綴動詞Vi，則動詞後面須有主詞補語SC：
1. Mrs. Li seems happy.
李太太似乎很開心。
2. Mary is a student.
瑪莉是個學生。
完全及物動詞Vt ，則須有受詞O，受詞O和主詞S相同，必須為名詞或具名詞功能之片語：：
1. Dogs eat bones.（名詞）
狗吃骨頭。
2. I heard that you got divorced.（名詞子句）
我聽說你離婚了。
3. They plan to go to Japan next year.（不定詞片語）
他們計畫明年去日本。
動詞若屬授與動詞Vt，則動詞後面須有兩個受詞，分別為間接受詞IO和直接受詞DO；
1. He gave me a book.
他給我一本書。
動詞若屬不完全及物動詞Vt，則動詞後面除了有受詞O外，還要有受詞補語OC；
1. He called me Bob.
他稱呼我為包伯。
另外，在句子裡，還會出現修飾語（Modifier）。修飾語有兩種：形容詞類與副詞類。形容詞類的修飾語可用來修飾名詞或當補語用，副詞類的修飾語則可用來修飾動詞，或形容詞或其他副詞，但也會當補語用。請看例句：
1. I saw a big turkey.
我看到一隻大火雞。
（形容詞big修飾名詞turkey）
2. We need a man with a stick.
我們需要一個有手杖的男子。
（介系詞片語with a stick當形容詞用修飾前面名詞man）
3. The police have caught the young men who robbed the bank.
警方已經抓到了搶劫銀行的那幾個年輕人。
（形容詞子句who robbed the bank修飾前面的名詞the young men）
副詞類的修飾語包括副詞、副詞片語、副詞子句以及其他具副詞功能的片語，如不定詞當副詞用、分詞片語當副詞用等。
一、動詞的修飾語：
1. He failed miserably.
他敗得很慘。
（副詞miserably修飾動詞failed）
2. The Smiths set out in the morning.
傑克森一家人在早上動身。
（副詞片語in the morning修飾動詞set out）
3. I’ll do it if you decide to do it.
如果你決定去做它，我就做。
（副詞子句if you decide to do it修飾動詞do）
4. To get there in time, you have to take a taxi.
要及時到那裡去的話，你必須搭計程車。
（不定詞片語To get there修飾動詞have）
5. Having finished dinner, the couple went out for a walk.
吃過晚飯後，這對夫妻出去散步。
（分詞片語Having finished dinner修飾動詞went）
二、形容詞的修飾語：
1. The issue is terribly wrong.
這問題出了大差錯了。
（副詞terribly修飾形容詞wrong）
2. She's kind to others.
好對人很和善。
（副詞片語to others修飾形容詞kind）
3. Her father was upset because she talked back.
因為她頂嘴，所以她爸爸很沮喪。
（副詞子句because she talked back修飾形容詞upset）
4. This money is enough to buy a yacht.
這些錢夠買一艘遊艇。
（不定詞片語to buy a yacht修飾形容詞enough）
5. John is short compared to his younger brother.
跟他弟弟比較起來，約翰算是矮的。
（分詞片語compared to his younger brother修飾形容詞short）
三、其他副詞的修飾語：
1. This hosre runs really fast.
這匹馬跑得真是快。
（副詞really修飾副詞fast）
2. She's so fat that she can't even walk around.
他胖得連到處走都走不動。
（副詞子句that she can't even walk around修飾副詞so）
